Court Fees Increase

Courts charge fees to accept various documents.  For example, if you want to sue someone in civil court in Minnesota, the district court will charge you $250 to accept the filing of your complaint.  If you then want to file a motion in that civil case, the court will charge you $55 to accept the filing of your motion.  The legislature sets these fees.  During this years session, they increased these fees.  Effective July 1, 2009 (tomorrow) to file your civil complaint will cost $320.  The motion fee will nearly double to $100.  Presumably, this is to offset some of the Judicial Branch's budget shortfall.

Some other highlights include:  Divorce petition: was $330, going up to $400; Conciliation Court filing fee: was $60, going up to $75; Certified copy fee: was $10, going up to $14; Appeals: was $500, going up to $550.
